U.S. Huntsville Land Office - relinquishments as provided by the Relief Act of 1821, 1827.

The Relief Act of 1821 allowed a debtor to give up or relinquish part of his land to complete payment on the rest or to extend the time of credit. This declaration form acted as an abstract of relinquishments. The forms are bound and include the debtor's name and county of residence and a sworn statement to abide by the rules of the act. Included is a description of the land relinquished - date of purchase, number and date of the original certificate and the location of the tract. The forms are signed by the debtor (or his attorney) and a clerk of the Register's office. These records document the procedures for the administration of the Relief Act of 1821 and illustrate the difficulties settlers encountered attempting to obtain and keep land.
